Vernacular Language Essay According to the dictionary, vernacular refers to the native language of a country. Throughout Rome, the language that was used was Latin; it was used throughout the Mediterranean and became the dominant language. Widely used by people with power, kings and queens. Latin was used as the formal language used in government and politics, this all changed during the 12th century when vernacular language started to become increasingly popular. During the Renaissance, Europe was undergoing a transformation. Cultural change occurs when there is a change in language or idea. During these times, people were interested in intellectual exploration. It was during this time that people felt that only highly educated people knew Latin. Bringing about a vernacular language was a way that they felt the need to educate the ordinary people. It was during this time that they began the transformation into the vernacular language. Up until the 17th century, most scholarly works were said to be in Latin. During the 12th century, many literary works were subject to translating. Most of the time the person translating would change things, they were not concerned with the ending, only how they have changed the various pieces into art. The development of the printing press and other technological advances was thought to be a method that sped up the process of spreading vernacular language. During this time, people who were economically disadvantaged could now read and own a bible. The use of vernaculars was thought of as a way to convert the non-believers. The spread of Christianity proved to be a method for spreading vernacular language. Petrarch was thought of as one of the most important figures of this time. He criticized the habits of the culture and believed their ideas were ancient soon others followed and this brought about the birth of humanism. Humanism was based on the belief that the philosophical works of Ancient Greece and Rome provided the best guide for living. Humanism was believed to be founded on three teachings humanistic studies, moral philosophy, and the qualities that make men and women good. Women played an important role in the spread of vernacular language, noble women insisted that literature was either written or translated to vernacular. Women began to assert their role as preservers of history. (Mccash, 2008) Most women had limited education so they were not proficient in Latin, this led to the acceptance of Romance and Germanic vernaculars. Women were given a chance to express themselves and participate in courtly debates. Women played a huge role in the transformation from clergy to court. (McCash, 2008) Women felt a sense of power by the rise of vernacular language; they began to write poetry, some even became translators. In the 13th century, Margery Kemp wrote the first autobiography in the English language. â€Å"Women turned to literature to express their pain and suffering, their longing and their loss, and their beliefs and vision† (McCash, 2008)

When navigating to the official website of Self, one of today’s leading women’s magazines, I was not surprised to immediately stumble upon a photograph of two slender women, in skimpy shorts and sports bras, exercising on the beach. â€Å"Flat belly Secrets† was the headline under the image, along with the subtopics â€Å"Magic Moves that Work Your Whole Core,† â€Å"Superfoods for a Sexy Stomach,† and â€Å"4 Ab Mistakes Everyone Makes.† It is no secret that modern American culture gives great importance to body image, namely to having a â€Å"perfect† physique, although a vast majority of the population is far from attaining said physique. I struggled for years to â€Å"make peace† with my own body and obtain a positive body image, hence why I have chosen to research body image and the media, focusing more on the female aspect of it. With so much attention being given to people’s perceptions of their own physical beauty, numerous studies have been conducted on men and women of all ages. Every single study I read about in gathering information for this report showed that body image dissatisfaction, â€Å"the feeling that people may have that their actual physical appearance is not how they would ideally like it to be† (Kovar), is experienced by an astonishing number of men and women. That being said, it was also evident from the research that women are significantly more affected by body image dissatisfaction. One particular study of male and female undergraduates concluded that compared to men’s perceptions, â€Å"women's [body image] perceptions place [greater] pressure on them to lose weight† (Fallon and Rozin). Body dissatisfaction is a risk factor for eating disorders and is said to be most common in Western cultures, predominantly with teenage girls (Boone and... ...ave A Negative Impact On Body Image And Behaviors? Explanation of Human Behavior Essay

Psychology is a vast field that studies the behavior of a person. Because of psychology there is a better understanding of the disorders people may be affected by, the choices people make, and even the sexuality of the human race is understood by psychology. How psychology came to be, is a question that I had asked myself in the past. When researchers chose to directly observe psychological events, such as timed reactions, 130 years ago, psychology emerged into a scientific field of its own. The first psychological lab was created in 1879 by Wilhelm Wandr. Since the field of psychology was originally developed by Caucasian males, many beliefs were biased. As the field of psychology has grown, so has the diversity involved in psychological study; leaving us with more accurate understanding. As I happened to mention earlier, psychology is a vast field. This leaves room for many different perspectives. There are three primary perspectives with several sub-fields of psychology. First there is the biological perspective which includes biopsychology and evolutionary psychology. Second, is the psychological perspective that includes behaviorism, cognitive psychology, the psycho-dynamic approach, and humanism. The third perspective of psychology is the sociocultural perspective. Together, these three perspectives and their sub-fields have helped in advancing knowledge in the field. A long standing debate in the field of psychology is the effect of nature and nurture on a person’s behavioral development. I feel that both are equally important factors in how a person behaves. Some people are born with psychological disorders, but their upbringing helps them live a comfortable life without being controlled by their disorder. Others grow up in a bad environment that brings out the worst of their disorders. There are some people who aren’t born with psychological disorders, but develop some over time due to their upbringing. For example, I was born without any  abnormalities and was completely healthy. Unfortunately I was born into a family of addiction and violence. As a child I was sexually, physically, and emotionally abused. As a result of this abuse I suffered from depression and even now as an adult, many of my choices are influenced by the environment I grew in. I do feel that a lot of personal choices are in our own control, though. Another example, though I was raised in the type of family I was raised in, I chose to be better. I chose to break the pattern of addiction and abuse and become a better person. I know other people who grew up in the same situation as me, and they choose to follow the path and they choose to carry a grudge that the world owes them something. In 1964, Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian philosopher of communication theory and public intellectual, coined the phrase â€Å"The medium is the message.† The aforementioned quote, taken straight from Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, states the medium itself controls and shapes controls and shapes how humans interact with the message; this quote has stayed with me since I learned it in high school, not only because it sparked my interest in the media business, but it also allowed me to understand on how I connected with it on different forms throughout my day. Over 24 hours, I come in contact with three different ‘highways’ of information that distorts and influences my views in the world: the Internet, Radio, and the Newspaper. The form of media that I consume the most: the Web. In fact, assuming I am awake for 16 hours, I regularly check some form of the Internet, at the minimum, once every hour. Whether through Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram), News sites (Toronto Star) and or aggregates (Reddit) the Internet keeps me connected with the world. Throughout my day, I have processes that are dependent on me being able to communicate. I check my email in the morning; I use apps on my phone that display the Toronto Star or Reddit so I could suffer the boredom of being on transit two hours a day. Web of Deceit in Othellonbsp;nbsp; Shakespeare’s Othello portrays a process through which pure evil has an effect on love and morality. The character of Iago twists Othello into killing his wife, and eventually himself, through manipulating Othello’s trust and loyalty. Iago uses the handkerchief as a symbol through which Othello is convinced of Desdemona’s unfaithfulness. This handkerchief plays many roles throughout Othello. Because of the importance placed upon this object, the driving force of the play becomes centered on the particular qualities of this handkerchief. In its most important aspect, the handkerchief becomes associated with a kind of web set by Iago, in order to ensnare both Othello and Desdemona. By pure providence, Iago comes into possession of the handkerchief Othello gave to Desdemona at the beginning of their relationship. Though he does not have any direct influence upon the actions and thoughts of Othello, Iago has shaped Othello’s patterns of behavior to conform to his evil plans. In Act III, Othello has strong doubts with respect to Desdemona’s faithfulness. He confronts her by asking Desdemona where the emotionally-valuable token is. When she does not produce it, Othello tells her of its value: Tis true: theres magic in the web of it: A sibyl, that had numberd in the world The sun to course two hundred compasses, In her prophetic fury sewd the work; The worms were hallowd that did breed the silk; And it was dyed in mummy which the skilful Conserved of maidens hearts. (III, iv L.69-75) Here Othello plays upon the same imagery as Iago to emphasize the value of the particular handkerchief. By likening the handkerchief to a web, Iago’s influence into the lives of Othello and Desdemona becomes very clear. The motion of the plot from this point on is governed by the proof Iago produces about Desdemona’s infidelity through the medium of the handkerchief. By calling that piece of cloth a web, Othello turns that object into something which falls under Iago’s sphere of influence. This passage serves two functions. In general terms, democracy is characterized as a government in which citizens have the capabilities to exercise political autonomy to influence the affairs of the state. To be more precise, citizens are able to exercise direct control over the government—as in the case of pure democracies—or they are able to exercise indirect control—as in the case of representative democracies. Of course this general characterization is an oversimplification of what a democracy is and precisely how it functions. However, the ability of the citizenry to influence state affairs is the bedrock that generally constitute a democracy. In an attempt to further sharpen this concept, I found it necessary in my previous paper to consider what democracy looks†¦show more content†¦Second, in recognizing that democracy can take on the extreme of these tendencies, my characterization now includes the assumption that democracy requires a relative nature—a constant shift between consolidation and decentralization—to guard against the possibilities of tyranny by the minority or the majority. Firstly, parents always do everything in need for their children. Every day, I see pregnant women prepare for their future children with the hope their children will become a good person, or even a talented person. Therefore, it is so normal if you see a gruff women becomes so sweet, reads books about nutritious foods or about how to help children to become talented. Not only so, parents are ready to change their habits, their living environment just because they always hope that their children will be taken care in the best way. This devotedness to their children we can see not one day, two days, but through their whole lives. Secondly, with the belief that parents will do anything good for them, children always listen to their parents advices, even it is good or not. When a child is just born, it will imitate anything from its mother first, and then others around it. If the mother is always smile, it will probably that their child like smiling as her. Everything is deprived from their experience in their lives, or what they learn from books and other people. Finally, parents are the one who teach their children how to speak, how to behave and learn the basic etiquettes. Thus, this help the child to grow into a morally responsible and sound individual. In short, I think with the interactive impact between parents and children, I can deduce that parents will be the best teachers of their children even it is bad or good factor. For example, at school the children opened to the bad and good behaviour widely but the children often with the good atmosphere from their parents at home. They can know the best behaviour for them. For example, the familiar public transportation like a bus. Certain buses are too high for the elder people to step on the stairs. Another example is the bus conductor frequently call for more passengers even though the bus had fully sit. I agree with the statement that public transportation in Malaysia needs to be improved especially with their facilities. First of all the major problem faced by the community on our public transport system is an expensive fare price. Especially taxi fares are considered by society as expensive for them to use the regular transportation system. There are some taxi that did not use the taxi meter. They have set their own price and it is difficult for the people because they just deliberately set higher prices. The foreigners always become the victim because they did not familiar and know how the system works here in Malaysia. The taxi driver just want the money and profit from it. In addition, public transportation crisis is also linked to public transport system is inefficient. Communities consider public transportation system, especially buses are useless especially itinerary makes the difficult to plan and anticipate the journey that they will encounter. Thus, people not only see the failure of public transportation compliance schedule, but also their failure to maintain the quality of their public transportation services. Lastly, public transportation that need to be improved is problem to convert the transportation system. For an instance, the LRT or monorail to the bus to the monorail. As a result, affected the conduct of passengers having to queue up to buy tickets before boarding public transportation and others. It will be difficult for the adults in the morning because they need to rush and quickly reach to their offices.
